Fed: Alston not interested in Telstra job

Former communications minister RICHARD ALSTON says he is not interested in the top
job at Telstra.

The telecommunications giant has appointed an executive search team to hunt for a new
chairman after BOB MANSFIELD quit on Wednesday.

Prime Minister JOHN HOWARD last week talked positively of the former minister's abilities
and said he does not oppose his possible appointment.

But Mr ALSTON says he isn't applying for the job.

He has told The Australian Financial Review that he has already more than enough on his plate.
